How to Set Up Hamster Houses

Once you bring your new pet hamster home, it’s important that you learn how to care for its hamster house. You’ll need to purchase a cage for your hamster to live in, complete with an exercise wheel, food bowl, water bottle, sleeping space, and bedding. Your job, as a hamster owner, is to make sure that your new pet is healthy, happy, and well taken care of.

Bedding

After assembling your hamster house according to the manufacturer’s instructions, add an inch or two of bedding material to the cage. Your hamster will use this material for nesting, sleeping, and going to the bathroom.

Your hamster will likely pick one corner of the hamster house to use as a bathroom, and another corner to use as a food storage area. He or she will only use the bathroom in one area of the cage, so you’ll need to clean this corner regularly. Your hamster will also choose another area of the cage to hoard their favorite foods, nuts, and seeds. If you choose a clear plastic hamster house, you’ll be able to see through the plastic as your hamster’s food stores grow.

Sleeping Area

Hamsters like to sleep and hide in small, enclosed areas. You can purchase a small plastic tube, tunnel, or cave for your hamster house, if you like. Hamsters are nocturnal – they sleep in the daytime and play at night. This enclosed area allows them to get away from the bright sunlight so that they can sleep during the day. If you like to keep an eye on your pet, choose a translucent material for this hiding spot, so the light is obscured but you can still see your pet while it sleeps.

Feeding

Your hamster house will also need a food bowl and water bottle. Hamsters need access to fresh food and clean water at all times. Be sure to keep your hamsters bowl at least partially filled, and refill the water bottle daily. Your hamster will eat some food as it is hungry, but it will also store food in its cheek pouches and hide it away in its cage for later. This is normal hamster behavior. When you clean your hamsters cage, it may be necessary to remove these food stores; don’t worry, your hamster may seem confused at first, but it will quickly rebuild its storage area.
